AN ADVISE FOR PRESIDENT MOHAMMODU BUHARI As i wave goodbye to my parents,i look around me cautiously to be sure there are no hoodlums that may try to harass me as thier usual practice to school children, satisfied i shuffle on till i get to the bus-stop a place identified by the loud honkings of horns and the lousy calls of conductors as they announce the diffrent destinations of vehicles.I soon find a bus in the direction of my school and hop in.I start to complain about the pathetic condition of the seats but the driver shoots me a dirty look which i understand and so i quickly sit down through bumps and potholes i finally manage to get to school in one piece.Throughout my first three classes i listen attentively and write my notes appropiately although my mind is someplace else.Soon it is time for a more disaproving subject:History.Bored as ever,i expect the teacher to come in and write a long note and afterwards proceed to a most boring lesson, but no, he pulls in a projector and begins to address the class.Soon i am fascinated and taken aback by all that he says.He speaks of my country Nigeria, her past, her present state and her likely future my brain kicks into action with questions on my mind;Why,where,when...I wonder why a nation blessed with about 80 million hectares of arable land should even think about importing our main cash and food crops,a nation blessed with crude oil as a vast mineral resource should after 12 years of oil boom should have citizens complain about the cost of petroleum or even power failure at all,I wonder where the intellectual excellence of her youths have gone that we have to employ so called foreign expatriates and pay them huge amounts.I also wonder where the patriotism we so openly declared on the 1st of October 1960 has gone.As a teenager and an upcoming youth i may not know the rise and fall of the Nigerian stock i do know what ails and trouble my People,my family;Nigeria.I know that you have proved yourself beyond doubt as a competent leader. However in your present office as the president of Nigeria you may not priviledged to do whatever in-depth study on the living condition Nigerians that may prove beneficial to you in your strategising for a better Nigeria. So i as a Nigerian and a teenager in one of the most determining states of Nigeria:Lagos, having an Eagle’s eye view of the living condition of Nigerians have thought about this and have brought advices that may prove useful to you. Most of the problems in Nigeria are interlocked in a way which i will explain as i progress.First in schools irresponsible teachers are now distrupting the efforts of hardworking teachers, students are truants, education no longer important, movie stars and musicians who seem to live wordly, glamorous and seemingly perfect lifes are now role models to most students .The irony being that these so-called role models do not make it clear to students the danger of forsaking education.the students see that less emphasis is placed on the work of the teacher.teachers in Nigeria today are paid a meagre sum of money compared to other occupations they often indulge in other means of making ends meet.Hence thier abscence from work and lost focus even when present.Students begin to forsake books and willingly indulge in time and oppurtunity waste.Only a few suceed in thier chosen fields, the rest drop out or find illegal means of passing thier examinations and later become the corrupt leaders and professionals. Those that drop out become hoodlums not by thier own wish but by circumstances, they become the terrorists that threatens the security of innocent citizens. Those that faced thier studies squarely are forced to live from hand to mouth because of uneployment. The corrupt leaders rule and greedily compile wealth for themselves ,they steadily destroy the nation’s economy, the upcoming generation has less worthy role models. Teachers are most important in the building of a worthy nation and therefore should be treated as such. The task of building leaders is a weighty one and should not be given to uncertified teachers; Before a teacher is employed he/she should be screened effectively to ensure capability.Teachers in schools should be allowed to return to school for a particular period of time a sort of refresher course, teachers found dedicated to thier work should be recognised to motivate them as well as others.Salaries of teachers should be increased, my motive for this is my earlier explained reason for teachers’ abscence and lost focus at work.I am of the opinion that an increase in salaries will put them on a tighter rein and cause them to be focused. To counter the students wrong perspective about education,i advise sir that the F.G starts by controling what is shown on public T.V and what people listen to on air.I have found it quite dishearting that a large percent of Nigeria’s media is more intrested in blaring out soap operas, movies and fashion shows instead of educative informative programs that are beneficial to both alduts and students .I have also considered the prospect of the F.G giving out scholarships .Sir i would like you to consider how the yearly WAEC/NECO scores of Nigerian students will be affected if the F.G decides to give university schorlarships to the best 100 or150 students .I think that it would greatly increase the scores because students would be encouraged to study harder so as to become beneficiaries of the schorlaship. A matter i have particularly taken into consideration Mr president sir,is the issue of the recent unstability of the price and unavailability of fuel especially PMS commonly known as petrol. It is pathetic sir to notice that Nigerians often have an hair raising experience trying to get fuel to power thier vehicles, houses, factories e.t.c.Although i know that the F.G. is working to corrrct this, i wonder if more efforts could be directed into bringing Nigeia’s refinaries to life as this would facilitate healthy circulation of petroleum and its products and also stabilize thier price.Another matter worth looking into is Nigeria’s Agricultural and manufactuuring sectors. With all due respect for the government i think it is time for the gorvernment to pay more attention to these two sectors.A recent survey in 2012 showed the G.D.P. as Agriculture 40%,services 30% Manufacturing 15% Oil 14 % .A quick look at this survey may give a picture of a country with a lot of revenue from the Agricultural sector. But an in-depth study of this survey in relation to Nigeria should reveal a country with a great potential for exploitation in the Agriculural and Manufacturing sectors.Nigeria as i have earlier mentioned ,is a country blessed wih arable land that measures about 80 million hectares which accounts for 23% of Africa’s arable land. Each of Nigeria’s regions have specific crops that thrive without much ado under the right circumstances. This should be taken advantage of by encouraging farming and right farming methods.the manufacturing sector can be improved by encouraging upcoming S.M.E.s(small and medium enterprises). This can be achieved by giving out loans and partnership oppurtunities .I hope that you find these few advices helpful as you delibrate on steps to take oon the issues mentioned above and others.I wish you success in your endeavours.Thank you sir.
